Why English matters?

Collinz International Schools seek to help all members of our Learning Community understand what an English-speaking environment means via clear and concise communication. The School respects all languages equally but has a special responsibility to promote English as it is the language of instruction, the language of the vast majority of the curriculum, the language of public examinations, and the lingua franca of the world outside of this school.

When and where to use English?

In class (with the exception of Second/ Foreign Languages lessons) and during registration periods, English shall be spoken at all times, unless the speaking of another language is part of a deliberate and clearly explained strategy, or needs to be used briefly by students in order to check their comprehension of or application of academic principles, concepts or language.

How can parents help?

The English Language Environment can be promoted at home by creating an environment in which books written in English, and English Language media (internet radio, BBC podcasts, documentaries and films), have a position of prominence. Students will adapt much more quickly to the English Language Environment in school if parents understand the rationale for English Language Environment Policy and use this knowledge to help promote a love of English language learning outside of school.

Child Protection is the process of protecting students identified as either suffering, or likely to suffer, significant harm as a result of physical, sexual, or emotional abuse.

The school provides a safe, positive, supportive and stimulating environment which promotes the social, physical, psychological and moral development of the individual child.

Safeguarding involves the measures and structures put in place by the school which are designed to prevent and respond to abuse. The safeguarding responsibility includes a duty to treat all children equally and offer the same right to safety to all. This encompasses these principles:

  • To protect children from harm (maltreatment)
  • To treat the interests of our children as paramount (taking into consideration any disability, their culture and history)
  • To consider at all times the best interests of the child

Collinz International is committed to maintaining and promoting good behaviour. Bullying of any kind is unacceptable and will be dealt with in accordance with this policy. This policy covers all bullying of which the School is aware including when the pupil is off school premises under the lawful control of school staff. This policy should be read in conjunction with the School's other policies such as the Child Protection Policy.

All pupils should be responsible for bringing bullying to the attention of any adult or member of staff.

Types of bullying

All forms of bullying can cause physical and emotional harm (and cause psychological damage). Bullying behaviour can be (but is not limited to):

  • Physical - hitting, pushing or any act that invades personal space
  • Verbal - name-calling, teasing and taunting. Racial and sexual harassment.
  • Social - exclusion by groups or individuals. It may be motivated by prejudice against a particular group, for example, on grounds of religion, culture, race, gender, disability, Additional Learning Needs (ALN) or sexuality or because a child is adopted
  • Emotional - exclusionary behaviour, intimidating, being unfriendly, using silent treatment to upset others.
  • Cyber - intimidation and abuse via electronic means (text, e-mail, social networking sites) & any behaviour that can be seen as hate crime, including relating to social media.
How can we help?

The School is committed to working with all pupils and staff to prevent bullying by raising awareness through training, taking action to reduce the risk of bullying at times and in places where it is most likely. There are a number of ways in which pupils are supported. Pupils may speak with teachers, peer mentors or staff regarding their concerns. In other cases, it may involve asking the management team to provide support and/or formal counselling as well as engaging with parents. All pupils are encouraged to speak with members of staff immediately if they feel bullying is occurring, either as victim, witness or perpetrator.
